“Honest, practical, encouraging, and revelation- provoking”

“Julia is someone who cares about your script just as much as she cares about your well-being as a writer and a human — her notes are honest, practical, encouraging, and revelation-provoking all at the same time. When I’ve written something and I’m not sure it’s ready to be seen by the world, Julia is the first person I call, because she always has the patience, know-how, and tact to get my words to really sing in a natural, organic way that feels and sounds like me.” - Patrick

Some student feedback:

“She is legit brilliant at this”

Julia's class was well-structured, bite-sized, and easy to follow. As a teacher, she lays everything out very clearly, welcomes discussion, and connects the dots for you in a way that'll have you wishing class was just a little bit longer. As a coach in our 1-on-1s, she gave me all the tough love and gentle redirection that any burgeoning screenwriter could possibly ask for. When I was going off the rails with my ideas, she knew exactly how to reign me back in. She even called me out (privately) on overcomplicating my story as a procrastination tactic which was accurate and perceptive as hell! Julia will leave you confident in the story you've broken together, time and time again. She made me feel like, in the big bad world of Hollywood, there's always someone on my team. Take this class! You will NOT regret it.” - Kaeli

I looked forward to scheduling time with Julia on my most recent pilot project, but I was beyond impressed by the coaching structure she provided, the quality of the feedback, and the expertise she brought to walking through the material. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Julia to writers in any stage of their process and will definitely take any opportunity to work with her in the future! - MeLissa

No shade, but I have an MFA in screenwriting from Columbia and I learned more about pilot writing from Julia in just a few HOURS than I did in my TV writing class at school (that cost me bazillions of dollars in student loans). She is legit brilliant at this, so nurturing to all of us no matter the genre or style of pilot, and is helping me write my pilot during a tricky post partum time of no sleep. I was hesitant at first to spend MORE money learning about writing after going to film school, but the truth is that I was spinning my wheels without structure, writing is hard even for the most seasoned writers, and a brilliant teacher is a gift worth grabbing if you need clarity or a boost for any reason. Thanks Julia, you rock. -Sonya

“perceptive as hell”

Taking Julia Meltzer's comedy pilot writing class was an incredible experience for me as a first-time screenwriter and full-time doctor. This opportunity jump-started my other media opportunities, including becoming a media consultant for USC Health, Hollywood, and Society, where I have opportunities to consult for medical shows like Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med and more. I am now also executive producing a hospital funded medical documentary, thanks to the skills and confidence I gained from this class. -Oranicha Jumreornvong, MD

Julia is such a confident and supportive teacher. I came in with a seedling of a pilot idea and she helped me through multiple restructures and rewrites (and this was with 7 other people in the class!) so that I had a solid first draft when I left. She also is very keen on helping you write YOUR vision, so her notes are never suggestions on what she would do, but the ways we could take the material in the direction we want to head. Clearly I love her because I keep coming back for more!!  - Namrata

“Julia’s guidance getting my pilot from the idea phase to a finished product was invaluable. I really appreciated her knowledge in not only creating a strong script but her insight into the industry as well. I feel much more prepared and confident in what I’ve created and she’s a huge part of that. If you want someone who will go above and beyond for you and your script, I highly recommend her.” - Spencer

“Even though I've been a professional writer for well over a decade, I didn't have the courage or structure to take on a long-form project like a pilot. Julia's class gave me both. Her gentle encouragement and fervent support really helped me achieve a years-long goal - finally writing a comedy pilot from start to finish! She's so damn good! Don't hesitate - get her as your writing coach STAT!- Jennie

“I loved taking classes with Julia! She's one of the first writing teachers I had who taught me the importance of clearly defined act breaks in a pilot. Julia is very attentive, encouraging and helped me stay true to my intentions and the story I wanted to tell.” - Shadé

“Julia Meltzer is a great writing teacher, coach, and consultant. I took her comedy pilot writing class at ucb and it was an extremely rewarding experience. She is excellent with writers of all levels, guiding everyone towards a stronger act structure, more distinct characters, and relating everyone's work to existing shows in a way only someone passionate about tv comedy could do. She creates a friendly atmosphere amongst a group of strangers that quickly form into an honest and supportive writers group. Her experience in the industry is inspiring and her knowledge of it is generously shared. I took the class to adapt a short film concept into a pilot script, but through consultation she recognized that I was forcing a pilot script out of what would be best explored as a feature length script, and offered an inventive way to adapt the idea into a pilot script that I never would have thought of myself. I would recommend Julia to any comedy writer, aspiring or professional and look forward to working with her again.” - George

Julia was able to immediately understand my story and made me feel the story was safe to explore more scenes, jokes and situations. She left me work to do after our sessions that really helped bring out a lot of the elements that my script needed. Highly recommend! - Ana
