(no) idea to detailed outline

on zoom!

now enrolling!!

Sundays, 6pm PT - 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, 10/6

(+ weekly office hours at a time TBD that works for everyone!)

I've now taught eight (!!!) 8-week pilot classes and have helped over 55 writers with their half-hour pilots, and I’ve noticed a pattern. In my eight-week class, students that generated a strong detailed outline all ended up with completed first drafts — that were a couple of rounds of revisions away from being the kind of drafts you send to your industry contacts!! Students that had to move on without a strong detailed struggled to get a satisfactory draft. So I designed this class to make sure all the students in it would leave with a thorough, reliable detailed outline.

As always, this class starts with an emphasis on creating a compelling idea for TV that reflects the student’s unique comedic point of view, and then we figure out how to craft the first episode of that TV show, focusing on using three-act structure to communicate character, story, tone and more.

9/8 - week 1 - develop your idea

9/15 - week 2 - one sheets

9/22 - week 3 - story area

9/29 - week 4 - detailed outline (due 6pm 9/27)

10/6 - week 5 - revised detailed outlines (due 6pm 10/4)

wait, but what about the actual script???

I will continue to offer 3-week WRITE/REWRITE CLASSES where you can bring in your script one act at a time, and you can take that as many times as you want until your script is polished and ready to go. Once you have taken my outline class you will be eligible for write/rewrite classes.

I will also note that past (No) Idea to Detailed Outline students have quickly turned out great first drafts of their pilots without a follow-up class.

Also note: I am a working screenwriter. If I get a job that I cannot schedule around this class, I will convert the remaining sessions to private meetings scheduled at your convenience or refund you a prorated amount for the remainder of the class.

“Even though I've been a professional writer for well over a decade, I didn't have the courage or structure to take on a long-form project like a pilot. Julia's class gave me both. Her gentle encouragement and fervent support really helped me achieve a years-long goal - finally writing a comedy pilot from start to finish! She's so damn good! Don't hesitate - get her as your writing coach STAT!- Jennie
