A multi-camera sitcom is a TV show shot on a soundstage with a live audience (and/or a laugh track!), like all your faves - FRIENDS, CHEERS, GOLDEN GIRLS, WILL & GRACE, I LOVE LUCY, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and many many more! A great multicam sample is a powerful professional tool that showcases a writer’s versatility and technical skill, and this classic format can be a compelling backdrop for contemporary comedic points of view. Most young/new writers do not have a multicam sample - this instantly sets you apart. My multicam sample sold in a bidding war and started my professional writing career! I sold another multicam pilot the next season! I completely love the format and I’m here to help you use the conventions to make your story sing!

In this class students will develop a multicam idea and then outline and write a multicam pilot, immersing themselves in the tone, rhythms, and style of this genre of comedy.

As always, this class starts with an emphasis on creating a compelling idea for TV that reflects the student’s unique comedic point of view, and then we figure out how to craft the first episode of that TV show, focusing on using structure to communicate character, story, tone and more.

10/8 - week 1 - develop your idea

10/15 - week 2 - one sheets

10/22 - week 3 - story area

10/29 - week 4 - detailed outline (due 7pm 10/27)

11/5 - week 5 - revised detailed outlines (due 7pm 11/3)

11/12 - week 6 - first act*

11/19 - week 7 - second act*

11/25 - week 8 - third act*

*your multicam may end up being 2 acts. in that case you’ll turn in ~15 pages a week.

“Even though I've been a professional writer for well over a decade, I didn't have the courage or structure to take on a long-form project like a pilot. Julia's class gave me both. Her gentle encouragement and fervent support really helped me achieve a years-long goal - finally writing a comedy pilot from start to finish! She's so damn good! Don't hesitate - get her as your writing coach STAT!- Jennie

“No shade, but I have an MFA in screenwriting from Columbia and I learned more about pilot writing from Julia in just a few HOURS than I did in my TV writing class at school (that cost me bazillions of dollars in student loans). She is legit brilliant at this, so nurturing to all of us no matter the genre or style of pilot, and is helping me write my pilot during a tricky post partum time of no sleep. I was hesitant at first to spend MORE money learning about writing after going to film school, but the truth is that I was spinning my wheels without structure, writing is hard even for the most seasoned writers, and a brilliant teacher is a gift worth grabbing if you need clarity or a boost for any reason. Thanks Julia, you rock.” -sonya
